Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes inflammation of the body.  Inflammation of the skin is often an early sign of lupus that usually results in thinning of the hair and loss of eyelashes, eyebrows, facial hair, and body hair. Studies compared the hair diameter in patients with lupus and found they are much thinner, in general, than hairs from people without lupus. Hair on the scalp may gradually thin out, although a few people lose clumps of hair, 27%of lupus patients experience alopecia (hair loss).  There are others who experience permanent hair loss due discoid lesions which scar hair follicles.

Hair loss is one of the most devastating things that could happen to a woman.  Hair is considered a woman’s glory.  It can become overwhelming and depressing to look into the mirror without remembering how one looked before this disease set in see your hair thin out, leaving you feeling hopeless.  Low self esteem may set in making it difficult to find your place again.

More than 90 percent of people with lupus are women between the ages of 15 and 45. African American, Latina, Asian, and Native American women are at greater risk of getting lupus than white women.
